IoT, Big Data & Right Data: Quality over Quantity

Most of us have heard of Big Data. It’s a buzzword that has been circulating for years, promising more accurate and effective strategies. But what does it actually mean, and how does it relate to IoT?

From Big Data to Right Data

When we delve into the Big Data concept, we often encounter the famous 5 Vs: Volume, Velocity, Variety, Veracity, and Value. However, the focus has usually been on the first V – Volume. The amount of data has been equated with value, and companies have focused on collecting as much data as possible. But is more always better?

The answer is a clear no. Big Data is not equal to Right Data. Having large amounts of data does not guarantee success. On the contrary, it can lead to information overload and make it difficult to make data-driven decisions.

Right Data: The Strategic Approach

Instead of focusing on collecting as much data as possible, we should shift our focus to Right Data. It’s all about being strategic in your data collection and only collecting the data needed to achieve our goals.

  • Set clear goals: What business cases do you want to solve? By defining your goals, you can identify the specific data you need.
  • Find the right data: Identify which relevant data sources you should explore to achieve your goals. This data can be found internally and externally, such as customer, sensor, or website data.
  • Choose the right tools: Different data needs to be collected using different methods, processing styles, and analysis approaches.
  • Quality over quantity: Data must be relevant, accurate, and complete. Bad data sets lead to bad decisions. Quality is always more important than quantity.
  • Visualize your data: Tell the important story your data is trying to communicate by using graphs, charts, or the like so that you can transform your data knowledge into easily understandable knowledge.
  • Evaluate and improve: Measure your results regularly and examine whether your data initiatives meet your expected results. Adjust your strategy based on your evaluation.

Remember:

  • Start small: Begin with a pilot project to test your approach.
  • Be patient: Data initiatives take time to implement and show results.
  • Collaborate: Involve relevant departments and stakeholders in the process.

By following these principles, you can ensure that your data initiatives create real value for your business.

IoT: The Key to Collecting the Right Data

The Internet of Things (IoT) offers new and exciting opportunities to collect data. IoT devices can generate incredibly precise and specific data on everything from temperature and humidity to machine activity and energy consumption. By utilizing IoT, companies can collect the exact right data in real-time and gain insights that were previously unthinkable.

Micro Technic’s Skylark: A Customized IoT Solution

At Micro Technic, we have developed Skylark, a flexible IoT device that can be adapted to the customer’s specific needs. At Micro Technic, you have the opportunity to get a complete IoT solution where we can help create customized data logger units that can measure different data points according to your specific needs. We can develop solutions that fit your current IT setup for a quick and easy start, but otherwise, we have close partners who can help create the software and platform solutions you might need. We can ensure high quality for your IoT product, as we manufacture these in our own production hall, where we have over 40 years of experience in electronics production.
